my Future Plans
PLANS, FLIGHTS AND THAT ODD VISA
Past experiences always generate new prospects. Sometimes it is enough to hear a word someone says to get going, while at other times one year’s planning goes by before things start moving. It has often happened to me that, while researching for a certain trip or reading others’ experience in a particular place, I felt I was already there, sipping that chai or letting myself be taken away by the human flow in the bazaar. Here are some of my current plans.
SAUDI ARABIA
Wednesday, 28 November 2018
Back in 2005, when going from Wadi Rum to Aqaba in Jordan, as well as the following year, while trekking across the Djebel Haraz in Yemen, I wondered about the center piece of the Arabian Peninsula. It was then that I started thinking about Madain Saleh, Qasr Marid. Or at least I thought it was that. I did a bit of research and found out that the visa was not an easy affair with no acquaintance there and that the few tour operators (bleah!) arranging tours there provided unnaturally comfortable packages; it slowly died. Some years later, when in Iraq, I realized it was not the UNESCO listed site that had attracted me to the kingdom in the first place, but rather that curiosity about the people living there and about feeling, even if from an air conditioned vehicle, the old caravanning route. So, definitely among my most expensive per diem trips, I shall go there once tourist visas are back or, alternatively, once I find a business visa sponsor. Patience allowed in, as there should always be, it is going to happen.
